Has a Civil War Begun?

Or is there a nationwide surplus of hyperbole, one which can only be neutralized by essays like this on in Front Page Mag:

The Democrats have become a terrorist party. And their commitment to a radical revolution has plunged our political system into chaos. The left is now exactly where it wanted to be.

And a civil war has begun.

The thesis seems to be that the left has become the radical left, intent on a #resistance to the point of tearing America apart. Oddly, the left says this sort of thing about the right every now and then:The extreme right-wing of the Republican Party has taken over the party, and will harm America with their pro-life, anti-LGBT, gun-toting, blah…

I suggest that the American left just wants power, not destruction. If the off-year elections go their way, the stupid will die down.

The Antifa and the astroturf warriors are only a tiny slice of even the most radical elements on the left. They are less committed to the struggle than the right, and less inclined to get up once their knocked down.

Social Justice Warriors are that in name only. If trashing a Starbucks is their idea of Lexington, or Fort Sumpter…I wouldn’t worry.

So long as the politicians and authorities protect “antifa” brownshirts, I’m not as sanguine as you.

  2. I understand, but I don’t think they will in the long term. The basic question now is IF the Antifa and the alphabet soup grievance groups will calm themselves, or will this require major police action? Not everybody on the left wants fires in the streets.

I’m not that worried about the hooded dinks of the antifa crowd, there aren’t that many and they aren’t that popular. It is the perpetual promised revolution that will never happen, that this country’s revolutionary communists have lost their teeth waiming to happen. Every time they set something on fire they lose a bit more support. I do think they’re misnamed, but that’s another issue. I’m more worried about Chavez-like ideology leaking into the minds and policy of the left’s political leaders.

We can much more easily survive 3 million masked men with torches than we can 30 men in power who want to control the means of production. The bad parts of the right are perhaps as dangerous as antifa, but the right’s politicians are much less enamored with controlling the means of production even to the extent that the left complains about it. Deregulation? The left scares it’s voters with the bogie man of the GOP getting rid of the various -fare and -care programs. Be it the legislative, judicial, or executive branch, the right’s philosophy is less dangerous. Many of the left’s judges seem to look to ideology before law. They’ve lost congressional seats on the back of claiming the clear text of the second amendment means something different.

Plus the right is further checked by the media. So I’ll agree that the right also has their crazies, I’d say they’re less dangerous crazies. If they wanted to revolt, they might be more successful, but wouldn’t be successful. Mostly because 1 million bricks do a lot less damage than one law made with 100% good intentions an 0% awareness of the bad side of what the incentives it creates will be. More or less all of the “war on…” objects that weren’t countries for example. And every party is guilty of jumping on that train. But, as evidence comes in that a program is ineffectual, at least the right pays lip service to wanting to reduce or end it. So I submit that equivalence isn’t justified. We don’t have to fear a million man anarcho-communist revolt. We just have to be aware that what a million men can’t do, 500 or so can and will if we let them.

In all too many places, San Bernadino, Chicago, others, the cops have actively chosen sides. They watch beatings and do nothing, they wait till Trump supporters are inside and change the traffic flow so they have to run the gauntlet to get back to their cars (while leaving 3/4 of the gauntlet cop-free and protester-packed), they have made it very clear which side they are actively supporting.

Oddly enough, the cops are choosing the side that chants “What do we want? Dead cops!” but I’m sure this is all a well thought out scheme that will work well for them in the end…

I don’t buy they’ve all chosen that side. Chiefs and other politicals? Sure.

Read second city cop and you’ll realize the police aren’t monoliths.

I have and do read SCC. I hear what you’re saying.

But when the good ones and the bad ones wear the same uniform, how am I to distinguish between them? When the good ones follow bad orders, how am I to distinguish between them?

        This will not end well.

  4. If there is a war brewing, I actually suspect that the battles will be cop vs. anarchist. The anarchists will have the upper hand, as police have rules. Still, I can’t buy the notion that anyone on the left would really bring a sustained wave of violence to the streets. Too masculine.

There exists a segment of the anarchists that actually do want physical violence. And there is a LARGE chunk of the remainder that is happy to pretend that threat is even larger, in the hopes that the concern over violence would let them succeed, but without the danger of actually being violence. Look at Coulter: she bailed out not because of violence, but from the threat of violence. (Well, more accurately, she bailed out because the city and university telegraphed that they would not be doing anything to prevent violence.
