…I wonder what our Founding Fathers would think of these United States of America some 240 years after the first reading and signing of the Declaration of Independence in Independence Square in Philadelphia.

George Washington once said, “If the freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent may we be led like sheep to the slaughter.” Call me a dinosaur, but I still pray and thank God for the freedoms we enjoy in this country — worshiping God, free speech, the freedom of conscience where a government cannot force its citizens to live and accept a new morality with which you may disagree, and the freedom to pursue economic growth for individuals and families everywhere. Freedom to keep and bear arms, freedom to vote, freedom of the press, and the freedom to have my own opinion, without being punished with IRS audits, taxes, and rules and regulations that infringe on these inalienable rights promised by our Founding Fathers.
If we are just a shadow of the great founders, it’s because we have allowed rights to be nibbled away. We accept the tiny encroachments because it is easier to get along than fight.
Fight against the nibblers, and you’re branded a radical or extremist. The Southern Poverty Law Center or the Council on American Islamic Relations will put you on a list.
[You must know I’m not endorsing anyone on those lists. The SPLC list has some Nazis and other characters whose opinions I reject. I support their right to speak, and later to be mocked if necessary.]
Free speech, the right to bear arms and the right to practice religion are under attack.
This Independence Day I’ll redouble my efforts to fight those who try to chip away at rights. We owe it to our children to help them understand where these rights came from, and what kind of country we should be.

The problem with groups that make their money by exposing terribles is that something needs to be the terrible they expose to continue making money. Incentives guide action. Even when all that is left isn’t particularly terrible at all. If they were 100% successful, you think they’d willingly disperse? The SPLC is like that. Or rather, its ideology is such that it sees many of those who agree with its central mission (if not the means, the cause, or the effect) as part of the terribles that they must oppose.
This is true of groups on our side as well.. if the mission is even a little vague, mission creep will eventually cause it to bring all sorts of mischief that was never intended. About the only group that gets it more or less right is the NRA, as protecting THAT right is fairly well defined. No wonder the left hates them.

The NRA is probably the most successful such organization which is probably why it’s problems with mission creep are less obvious than the SPLC. Or maybe it’s just harder to see when we mostly agree with even the side-tracks.
