The Round Table Discussion on the Role of Irony in University Discourse Will Go on as Planned

National Post:

Ryerson University [Toronto] has canceled a panel discussion called “The Stifling of Free Speech on University Campuses” following pushback from activists who said the event was giving a platform to fascists.

The event, which was set for August 22, was slated to feature controversial speakers including University of Toronto psychology professor Jordan Peterson, who rose to prominence after refusing to use students’ preferred pronouns, and journalist Faith Goldy, who works for the far-right Rebel Media. Behavioural scientist Gad Saad and psychologist Oren Amitay rounded out the roster.

Well realistically, had the event happened, it would have been drawn actual fascists, or as they’re called these days “counter protesters.”

Ryerson Communications Director Michael Forbes cited safety concerns as the reason the event was shut down.

“After a thorough security review, the University has concluded that Ryerson is not equipped to provide the necessary level of public safety for the event to go forward,” he wrote in an emailed statement. “In light of recent events, Ryerson University is prioritizing campus safety.”

The “Heckler’s Veto Awareness” lecture featuring a guy who once used the word “gals” to describe a group of women has also been cancelled. The University cited “concern over giving students a well-rounded view of the world” as the reason. They also mentioned that in light of recent events, they were “prioritizing cowardice.”

    They cancelled a group of merely controversial speakers on the word of people who are much more closely aligned with the ideas and techniques of actual facsists.

    As someone who lives in Toronto, I’ll just make a couple of points;

    First, Ryerson is a university in same way Jerry Falwell’s clown college is. It was actually considered a poly-technical institute until about ten years ago. It’s status was elevated because people thought that having two of the country’s largest universities here wasn’t enough.

    Second, Faith Goldy was fired last Thursday for accidentally showing up on a white power podcast in Charlottesville because “free speech.” It happens to the best of us, I guess. On the other hand, she didn’t say that confused Nazi salutes with symptoms of tetanus, which I had money on. Faith is now dedicating herself to complaining in public about being unmarried full-time.

      Were I not happily married, I’d sponsor her green card. (And certainly live to regret it.)
