Many on the left want to label politically or socially problematic speech as “hate speech.” Words which offend, they say, are in some way hateful and therefore fobidden.
“YOU CAN”T SAY THAT!”
I disagree, since sometimes the truth hurts. Lies hurt too, and I don’t want someone deciding which words I get to say.
How about this guy?
Sound bites are funny things. Just ask a politician who’s uttered something stupid in front of a Smartphone, and lived to regret it. But here’s a sound bite that grabs your attention: “Oh, Allah, liberate the Al-Aqsa mosque from the filth of the Jews…. Oh, Allah, count them one by one and annihilate them down to the very last one.”
Those words, separated by two sentences, were spoken this month by Ammar Shahin, the imam of the Islamic Center at Davis, California. It represented about two minutes of his 52-minute khutbah, or sermon.
On a technical basis, he did call for the annihilation of Jews by Allah. In a more realistic sense, he called upon Muslims to annihilate Jews. Because in most cases, Allah apparently waits for true believers to do his bidding. I’m not a lawyer, but this seems like incitement to violence.
The blogger I’ve linked above gets terrific credit for covering the controversy, including the defense of the Imam…which included the statement that he was only calling on the annihilation of some Jews. That’s a nuanced, yet useless argument.
“…annihilate them one by one…”
“…will no one rid me of this turbulent priest…”
” I herewith charge you with making all necessary preparations with regard to organizational, practical and financial aspects for a total solution of the Jewish Problem…”
I can’t bring myself to call for the illegality of words in most cases, but I thank the Imam for telling quite clearly what his plans are. We’re not called upon to be passive bystanders as our ideals are challenged.
Muslim London Mayor Sets Up Task Force To Jail Those Who “Annoy” Muslims Online
The office of London’s first Muslim mayor has secured millions of pounds to fund a police “online hate crime hub” to work in “partnership with social media providers” to criminalise “trolls” who “target… individuals and communities.”
Not sure if annoying them face to face is covered by this.
