They Came for the South African Stand Up Comics…and I said Nothing

In Canada, a comedian was fined thousands of dollars for a bad joke.  Next up is South Africa, which is considering a hate speech law which is of course, inclusive.  [Meaning that lots of minorities are mentioned. — Dave]Image result

According to BuzzSA, the bill will carry heavy fines and a maximum jail term of 10 years for anyone convicted of showing bias, prejudice or intolerance on the grounds of race, colour, sex, gender, sexual orientation, religion, belief, culture, language, nationality, birth, disability, HIV status, occupation or trade, albinism and ethnic or social origin.

It’s not the law in the United States.  Yet.

These kinds of stupid lawmaking decisions are like a fungus.  The spores blow across the ocean, and take root among the manure and peat of our soil.    Not here.  Not ever.

Isn’t bias a kind of low bar? I’m biased against hiring paraplegic piano players. I’m also biased against conducting business in Portuguese. I don’t hate either thing, but the first reality itself is biased against, and the second .. well, I can’t be expected to know all languages, and since the same busy bodies would like to require me to explain that, yes, the Oat bread indeed contains a fair amount of wheat in it, I can’t win.
