Crap Science and Sexual Abuse

Some science is crap.

If I told you that a person who could not speak, and has not meaningfully communicated in any way, was suddenly typing out sentences, you’d be suspicious. Especially if the only way they could type would be if a special “helper” was at the keyboard with them, holding their limp hand and arm.  Show the disabled person something, like a playing card or an object, but hide it from the “helper,” and suddenly the communication breaks down.  In other words, crap.

Facilitated Communication was all the rage in the 1990’s, but I remember lots of skepticism about it. I wrote about it a few months ago.  Now comes a book about FC with a review on the SCI/Skepical Inquirer website.

The professor who I wrote about months ago is now on trial for sexually abusing a man who she says can communicate with her only using FC.

But [prosecutor] Plant said Stubblefield betrayed the trust of D.J.’s mother and brother when she pursued a scheme to sexually assault him. She targeted him, because of his mental incapacitation, his physical limitations and the fact that he doesn’t speak, according to Plant.

He’s a 34-year old man with cerebral palsy.  It’s kinda like a mentally impaired individual giving consent for sex by Ouija board.  More about FC here.

If there’s one thing worse than crap science. it’s crap science used as a method of sexual abuse.

So she’s a Romulan, not a Vulcan? (Seriously, look at that photo. She’s a pair of pointy ears away from being a Trekkie’s degenerate wet dream. If they like the androgynous.)

This is horrible, one of the many fears of every parent of a nonverbal, disabled child.

Actually, I have more thoughts to share on this topic. By utilizing fraudulent facilitated communication, this person was denying her victim the basic human right of expressing his wants and needs.
There are so many augmentative communication devices available, with so many different access methods from eye gaze to blink and soon by reading a person’s eeg, there is no reason to make a disabled person dependent on a neurotypical person for facilitated communication.
I hope she is jailed for a long time.
